Mastering Technical Descents: Pro Tips for MTB Riders

Conquer the Mountain with Confidence

Mountain biking is as much about mental preparation as it is about physical skill. When you're facing a technical descent, your body position and braking technique make all the difference.

1. Look Ahead

Your bike goes where your eyes go. Instead of staring at the rock right in front of your tire, look 15–20 feet down the trail to plan your line.

2. The 'Attack Position'

Keep your elbows out, knees bent, and heels down. This allows your body to act as secondary suspension, absorbing the bumps that your fork might miss.

3. Brake Before, Not During

Try to get most of your braking done on the straight, smoother sections. Once you're in a technical turn or over wet roots, let the wheels roll to maintain traction.
